As artificial intelligence becomes a part of workers’ daily routines across nearly all industries, students need guidance in how to navigate this new technology effectively. A growing number of educators are now addressing AI transparency in their courses head-on.

For instance, many educators are working with students on integrating AI into their research, ideation, and even revision of their papers, showing students through direct instruction how to use generative AI tools ethically and responsibly while also setting clear limits on the use of AI in class.

This type of instruction helps prepare students for a workplace where many will be expected to have some degree of AI proficiency. In fact, a McKinsey study found that 78% of organizations now use AI within at least one business function—and the number of job postings requiring some form of AI skills more than doubled from 2024 to 2025.

But as educators incorporate AI into their courses, many are finding that it helps to have full transparency into which words are a student’s own work and which are likely AI-generated. Being able to distinguish between human and AI composition with a high degree of confidence helps educators have richer and more productive conversations with their students.

Learning to use AI responsibly

Take the example of Dr. Susan Ray, a tenured English professor at Delaware County Community College in Pennsylvania. On day one of her composition classes, she tells students that using AI as a substitute for their own original thinking or writing isn’t acceptable.

Yet, she encourages students to use AI as a tool for brainstorming and research as appropriate. She also teaches students how to write an effective prompt, and she builds highly structured uses of AI into her lessons so that students learn how to use the technology responsibly.

Ray trains faculty on teaching with AI. She says that AI literacy is critical, especially for vulnerable students who in many cases, may not have the experience or know where to start using AI without the opportunity a college-level class could provide.

While Ray has found that being open and transparent about AI use has discouraged cheating, she has also integrated AI detection software into her courses to ensure that students’ work is their own.

When students are using AI to help with brainstorming and ideation, they might incorporate bits of AI-generated text into their papers—either as a shortcut for putting ideas into their own words or simply out of carelessness.

These are the moments where it’s beneficial to have a robust AI detection platform that can identify even small chunks of AI writing buried within longer samples of mostly student-written papers.

With such granular insight, down to the likelihood (expressed as a percentage) that individual sentences or phrases might be AI-generated, educators have the transparency they need to have private conversations with students about whether—and how—they’ve used AI to help with assignments.

For instance, a teacher could say: “It looks like you might have used AI for this section of your paper. But I also see where it was in your own words. Notice how much richer that section is? Be careful to take what AI has given you and build on it with your own original thoughts and words, instead of just regurgitating what you get from an AI engine.”

AI transparency unlocks powerful instruction

The rise of generative AI represents a key opportunity for educators to guide students toward using AI in responsible and ethical ways. Setting clear expectations about when AI use is appropriate, and working directly with students to show them practical examples of how AI can be used effectively to support their work, can help close digital skills and equity gaps.

This type of instruction works best if educators have the tools in place to detect where AI is being used with great clarity and precision. Having full AI transparency unlocks powerful classroom instruction and allows generative AI to be used in very specific, pedagogically appropriate ways.
