City offering free digital education classes
Do you feel left behind in the Digital Age? Are you reading this from our paper version because you “don’t do” online newspapers? Well, the City of Orlando is offering you the chance to catch up and improve your digital literacy skills!
Through a $600,000 Community Development Block Grant, the City of Orlando is helping bridge the digital divide by offering free digital literacy classes at community centers across the city. These classes provide residents with the opportunity to learn essential skills — from using devices and browsing the web to managing emails and staying safe online.
“The City of Orlando is currently offering 90 one-hour sessions at 17 different locations through September 26,” according to Alyssa Hooton, Sustainability Communications Coordinator. “These classes are designed to give residents essential tools for navigating today’s digital landscape.”
Current sessions focus on foundational skills such as basic device navigation, understanding the internet and cyber security to stay safe online.
The City plans to evaluate the program’s success and provide new or similar offerings in the future. The grant also allows the city to expand the device checkout program and increase laptop donations for residents.
Locations include the Callahan Neighborhood Center, Rosemont Community Center, Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center, Langford Park Center, Rock Lake Community Center, Wadeview Community Center and Dover Shores Community Center.
