The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cut a $13,702,566 federal grant to the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) in May.

According to doge.gov, the grant to ADECA for Alabama’s digital equity plan was canceled on May 9.

According to usaspending.gov, the purpose of the grant is to implement the Alabama digital equity plan developed pursuant to the state digital equity planning grant program.

“The proposed activities include enabling digital skills development through training courses, supporting digital work development, expanding opportunities to learn online safety and privacy, expanding access to computing devices with technical support and affordable broadband service and expanding online accessibility of government services. Expected outcomes: the proposed award will use capacity grant program funding to realize its vision for digital equity and to implement activities and strategies identified in the digital equity plan. The proposed projects will result in better access to devices, implement digital skills and safety, and increased access to online government services,” a description of the grant said.

DOGE was started at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term to find taxpayer savings and is headed up by Elon Musk. DOGE estimates they’ve saved federal taxpayers $175 billion so far since Trump took office.
