Don’t Waste Your Money | Frustration continues as canceling online services remains a hassle | Business
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Canceling your online subscriptions was about to get a lot easier until a federal court stepped in and blocked the new rule, just days before it was set to take effect.
Have you ever tried to cancel a subscription, like Amazon or a streaming service, and ended up down a rabbit hole of frustration?
Unfortunately canceling could get even tougher now.
A new FTC rule called “Click to Cancel” was all set to go into effect, making life easier for consumers frustrated trying to get out of a contract. The proposed rule said that if an organization allowed you to join in just a couple clicks on your phone, canceling should be the same way.
It would have applied to gyms, meal delivery, and services like Amazon Prime that can take effort to cancel.
The rule was struck down, saying the FTC did not give businesses enough opportunity to react.
Consumer groups say with the court striking the rule down, companies have no incentive now to make canceling any easier and say some might even make it tougher.
Read the fine print before you sign up for the gym membership or streaming service, so you’re not surprised when you try to get out of it.
