Family starts fundraiser for 2 killed in carbon monoxide exposure
Family members identified the man and woman as Alden and Helianthe Monkou.
LARGO, Md. — A family in Maryland is reeling over the sudden loss of their parents following a carbon monoxide exposure last week. Now, family members have started an online fundraiser to raise money for funeral expenses.
Prince George’s County Fire Department spokesperson Michael Yourishin told WUSA9 that crews were called to the 9800 block of Berrywood Court in Largo for a medical emergency just before 11 a.m. When firefighters arrived on scene, they removed three people from an end-of-group rowhome. All of them were showing symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure. A man and a woman later died at the hospital.
Family members identified the man and woman as Alden and Helianthe Monkou.
“Alden and Helianthe were known for their giving spirit. They never hesitated to open their home to others, serve a warm plate of food, lift spirits with a song, or pause to say a heartfelt prayer when someone needed it most. Their kindness was never about grand gestures, it was about simple, everyday acts of love that made people feel seen, welcomed, and cared for,” a family member said on the fundraiser page.
At last check, the GoFundMe page had raised more than $38,000 toward its $45,000 goal.
“We are heartbroken, not only from losing them, but also facing the practical reality of arranging a meaningful funeral and service for two parents. If you’re able, any contribution, no matter the size helps ease the burden. If you’re not able to give, sharing this page or keeping our family in your thoughts is a gift in itself,” the family said.
More than 300 people have donated to the cause, including several anonymous donations of $1,000. So far, the family is 85% away from their goal.
