Grundy County Library awarded grant for early literacy tech

The Grundy County Library has received $4,980 in grant funding through the Missouri Library Association Access & Innovation grant program to support a new initiative centered on early childhood technology and digital literacy. The funded project is designed to expand technology-based learning opportunities for young children while strengthening early reading and listening abilities and reducing the local digital access gap.

The initiative targets children ages 2 through 8, an age group for which the library previously did not offer dedicated digital learning resources. The program introduces structured, age-appropriate technology tools intended to build literacy and digital familiarity in a secure and controlled environment.

Grant funds were used to purchase and install an AWE Early Literacy Station, a computer system preloaded with STREAM-focused educational software for children ages 2 through 8. The station operates without an internet connection, allowing children to explore digital learning activities while giving parents and guardians confidence in device safety and content controls. The system is intended to support reading readiness, listening comprehension, and foundational digital skills.

The project also added four Tonieboxes to the library’s collection. Tonieboxes are durable audio players that use figurines embedded with preloaded stories and music. Designed for children ages 3 and older, the devices promote listening development and imaginative engagement through digital storytelling and music-based content.

In addition, three Playaway Launchpad tablets were acquired through the grant. These tablets come preloaded with educational activities and stories for children ages 3 and older, with an emphasis on phonics, reading comprehension, and letter and number recognition. Like the literacy station, the tablets function without requiring internet access and provide a structured, child-safe digital learning platform.

The Tonieboxes and Playaway Launchpad tablets are available for checkout using an adult library card, enabling parents and guardians to bring the devices home for shared use. Because the devices do not require internet connectivity, families can access the educational content regardless of home internet availability.

The Grundy County Jewett Norris Library has provided free materials and services to Grundy County residents since 1891. Information about upcoming programs and available resources is posted on the library website.
