You might have heard the term “emancipated minor,” before. It refers to someone who, while not legally an adult yet, is no longer under the custody of their parents for one reason or another.
And if you’re thinking things would have to get pretty extreme and horrible for that to happen, well, not necessarily.
Sometimes, it’s just kinda exploitative.
The teen in this story is thinking about requesting to be emancipated but isn’t sure if that’s the right move.

two years ago my mom married my stepdad.
Both have kids of their own from before they met each other, my mom has 5 (including me) and my stepdad has 5 as well so when we all moved in together it went from me living with 4 other kids to 9 other kids.
I’m the oldest (16)
Her family spends her money.
I don’t want to give out too much info but I make money online.
I started out just doing it for fun for a little (before my mom married my stepdad) but it’s gotten bigger than just a fun hobby the problem is my mom and step dad both got involved and control all the money that I make.
They spend on bills, clothes for my siblings, groceries, and stuff like that but barely let me spend any of it.
I can’t save too much on my debit card.
The whole dynamic seems off.
Also It’s not just about money it’s also about them always making me babysit the other kids and sharing my things with them even though they don’t take care of things.
WIBTA to look into this?
It sounds like her parents aren’t treating her fairly.
