Nutrien offers new crop decision tools

A supplier of fertilizer inputs has developed new online tools to help farmers get the most bang for their crop input bucks.

Agronomist and tool developer Lyle Cowell tells Brownfield Nutrien’s input planning calculator can help producers easily figure out their real cost of production. “We also have to think about all of the costs. i call them fixed costs or costs that you really can’t adjust, or even things that you can. Things like fuel, consulting services, repairs, machinery payments, land payments, taxes.”

Cowell says the tool models yield goals, input costs, and market prices to project break-even points on a per-acre basis. “It might very much highlight that one crop is just not going to make you money. This is your chance to rethink things. Should I adjust acres? Should I perhaps look for another crop? Should I find some other practice or means to make money on these acres?”

Cowell says Nutrien’s other new calculator is for determining the right rate and source of dry fertilizer for each crop.  Both tools are free on Nutrien’s eKonomics™ website.
