Learning how to use your devices in this digital age can be overwhelming. Whether its writing an email, accessing social media or navigating cyberspace. Although it’s possible for everyone to use the internet with enough practice. The Duluth Parks and Recreation Department is helping older generations with expanding their digital literacy.

Residents 55+ years can attend the ‘Seniors Get Savvy’ program get a basic understanding of their devices. Whether its their phones, computers, etc., older community members can get a better acquainted with technology.

Pam Gunderson says thanks to the program she’s able to learn more about how to use her smartphone. At her most recent session she was learning how to download her wedding photos from a CD onto her phone.

“Seniors Get Savvy is a wonderful program for us seniors that didn’t grow up with cell phones, computers and all the technology,” Gunderson said. “They bring it right down to your level. It’s a one-on-one class. I pretty much have questions every month when I come here. I can tell you that my daughter thinks this class is absolutely wonderful. Because she doesn’t have to field all my questions.”

Gunderson added that the ‘Seniors Get Savvy’ program helps older generations expanding their digital literacy with basic technology inquiries. Although they might not be able to answer all individual questions.

“You can come in with a list of questions. You can just sit down and ask a question. They won’t be able to help with password recovery,” Gunderson said. “So you do need to know how to get in your things. But once there, they’re wonderful as far as teaching you how to navigate tricks of the trade”

Some helpful tips for younger family members helping their older relatives when going over new technology is listen to what problems they’re having, don’t use too much jargon solving the issue, and practice simple steps for every day use.

Folks can bring their questions and technology for an informational Q&A session to help build their internet confidence. The ‘Seniors Get Savvy’ program is offered the third Thursday of every month at the Evergreen Senior Center, 5830 Grand Ave from 10am-12pm. The next session will be Thursday, October 16h.
