The leadership task CEOs should own: McKinsey – Becker’s Hospital Review
CEOs benefit from being deeply involved in their organizations’ leadership development efforts, according to a July 10 McKinsey article.
While building leadership pipelines is a team effort, growth opportunities are more likely to manifest when CEOs take a hands-on approach. McKinsey recommends CEOs ask themselves and their teams what kind of leaders they want to develop, and to engage early and often with high-potential employees.
Additionally, CEOs should “own” development interventions rather than delegating them to human resources teams, McKinsey wrote.
Health systems are prioritizing leadership pipelines to ensure teams are equipped for the industry’s evolving landscape. Bob Sehring, CEO of Peoria, Ill.-based OSF HealthCare, told Becker’s in May that he is focused on talent mobility and expanding digital skill sets, particularly in telehealth and artificial intelligence.
As workforce demographics shift and the U.S. population ages, some systems are emphasizing early leadership and skills development in Generation Z — and Gen Z healthcare workers are pushing for that for development.
