The theme for World Youth Skills Day 2025 is “Youth Empowerment through AI and Digital Skills”. AI, coding, robotics, and cloud-based tools are becoming part of everyday work. 

Many jobs that existed a decade ago are being replaced or transformed. Therefore, it is crucial that young people gain access to education that is future-ready and practical. History of World Youth Skills Day

World Youth Skills Day was first declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Since then, it has been celebrated every year on 15th July. The purpose was to raise awareness about the high rate of youth unemployment and the need to promote skills-based education and training.

In many parts of the world, young people struggle to find jobs not because of a lack of education, but because of a gap between what they learn and what the market demands. This global day encourages countries to focus on vocational education, skill-building programs, and technical training for young learners.

Over the past decade, World Youth Skills Day has become a platform for dialogue, where educators, industry leaders, policymakers, and youth representatives come together to share ideas and success stories. 

10th Anniversary of World Youth Skills Day 

2025 marks the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day. Since its inception in 2015, this important day has evolved from a UN-led initiative into a global campaign featuring seminars, youth-led conferences, exhibitions, and skills competitions. To celebrate this anniversary, several special activities are planned for World Youth Skills Day 2025, including:

• High-level panel discussions will be hosted both virtually and in person at the Learning Planet Institute in Paris and the UN Headquarters in New York, bringing together UN officials, policymakers, educators, and youth leaders.

• A regional event session and virtual forum titled “Rewiring the Future: How AI Can Empower Girls and Youth for the Green Transition in Asia-Pacific”

This anniversary serves as a reminder that empowering youth is not a one-time action but a continuous process. Celebrating ten years of progress also gives the world a chance to honour those who have worked tirelessly to make skill development accessible to all.

Scheme for Youth Skill Development in India

India has taken strong steps to build a skilled and employable youth population. With a growing demand for a trained workforce, several government initiatives have been launched to address the need for quality skill development:

• Skill India Mission: Launched in 2015, this flagship scheme aims to train over 40 crore people in various skills by 2025. It includes both short-term and long-term training programs.

• Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0): This scheme provides free skill training to youth across the country. It focuses on industry-relevant skills and offers certification upon completion.

• National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS): Encourages companies to hire apprentices and provide hands-on training along with financial incentives.

• Start-up India and Stand-up India: These programs focus on encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation among youth, especially from marginalised communities.

• Digital India Programme: Aims to make young people digitally literate and promote tech-based skill training in areas like data analysis, AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity.

These schemes not only focus on skill training but also include career counselling, mentorship, and placement support. Special efforts have also been made to include rural youth, women, and persons with disabilities.
