The Daily Grind: Do you level MMORPG crafting skills so you can make money – or just make your own stuff?

A while back I was surfing a hobby Reddit when a lovely person pointed out that he wanted a thing made out of wood, but he didn’t like what was for sale, and paying for a custom item would cost way too much money, so instead, he devoted his time and coin to learning the skill and making it himself. Other people in the thread chimed in to admit that similar goals had led them to level up into craftspeople by accident, making things like blankets, pipes (?), furniture, bound books, and knives. Add up the costs of doing all that, and it probably would’ve just been cheaper to pay someone to make it. But sometimes you just wanna make it yourself.
And you MMORPG players know what I’m about to do next: point fingers right back at you! Some MMORPG players will learn a whole crafting skill to avoid buying something from someone else or participate in the player economy. A lot of you grind up skills and don’t even sell your wares! And still others of you will literally learn every crafting skill just so you have your options open. You know, should you need a custom pipe.
