Championing Solihull through skills, higher education and lifelong learning
By Dr Rebecca Gater, Principal & Chief Executive, Solihull College & University Centre
Solihull is a borough defined by ambition. Its economic strength, expanding knowledge economy, and strategic position within the wider West Midlands create a powerful platform for innovation and prosperity.
At the heart of this landscape lies a shared challenge, and opportunity: ensuring that people and businesses have access to the skills, expertise, and confidence required to thrive in a fast‑changing world.
As Solihull College & University Centre launches its new strategic plan this year, we reaffirm our mission to be the region’s anchor institution for lifelong learning, social mobility, and future skills.
Our five strategic ambitions set out a bold commitment not only to excellent teaching and transformative learning, but to contributing meaningfully to the borough’s civic and economic future.
A Beacon of Excellence for Every Learner
Our first ambition—to be a beacon of excellence in teaching and holistic support, reflects the vital importance of a skilled, resilient, future‑ready workforce. High-quality teaching and strong pastoral support are essential as learners navigate career pathways shaped by digital transformation, AI, and evolving industry demand.
This ambition comes to life through the achievements of our students. This year, we were immensely proud to see one of our construction apprentices, Santina Bunting, admitted into the Association of Colleges’ Hall of Fame, one of only two individuals nationally to receive this honour.
Her success is a powerful example of what happens when exceptional teaching, ambition, and the right support come together.
It also reflects our commitment to widening participation in sectors where women, and those from minority ethnic backgrounds, are still underrepresented, and to nurturing a diverse workforce that mirrors Solihull’s economic aspirations.
Skills for Life, Skills for the Future
In the 2025/26 academic year, we will have trained more than 12,000 individuals across a diverse range of programmes, from full-time study and apprenticeships to higher education, adult retraining and bespoke employer provision.
This scale of impact is integral to our second ambition: establishing Solihull College & University Centre as the region’s lifelong learning destination.
Our role extends far beyond preparing young people for their first career step. We support adults returning to education, employees reskilling for green and digital technologies, and employers looking to future‑proof their organisations.
Our higher education offer, flexible, affordable and delivered locally, widens opportunity and strengthens Solihull’s long-term skills base.
Our commitment to meeting Solihull’s future skills needs is reflected in the significant capital investment we are making in emerging and priority sectors.
Recent developments include the region’s only Heat Pump Installation Training Centre, a fully equipped PEMD (Power Electronics, Machines and Drives) laboratory, a fully equipped e-sports training centre and a new AI Lab designed to support digital transformation across industries.
These facilities ensure that learners and employers can access cutting-edge training in green technologies, electrification, and artificial intelligence, areas essential to the borough’s long-term competitiveness and sustainability.
As the West Midlands cements its position as a hub for innovation, we are committed to pioneering new approaches to digital transformation, inclusion, and culture.
Embracing AI and emerging technologies enhances teaching, learning, and operational efficiency while enabling creativity, curiosity, and belonging. Our focus on equity ensures every learner can access the opportunities emerging in Solihull’s evolving economy.
A Civic Partner for Solihull’s Future
We are more than an education provider, we are a civic partner. Through purposeful communication, strong collaboration, and a shared commitment to place, we work with employers, civic leaders, and community organisations to deliver inclusive growth and long-term prosperity.
Our dedication to sustainability, financial resilience, and environmental responsibility underpins our role as a bold, future-focused anchor institution.
As Solihull continues to grow, innovate and attract investment, we stand ready to champion the borough’s potential, empowering individuals, supporting employers, and contributing to a thriving, inclusive, and forward‑looking local economy.
