New Microsoft data: AI adoption continues to rise – Switzerland remains above average
The global use of artificial intelligence continues to accelerate. In the first quarter of 2026, 17.8% of the world’s working-age population (people between the ages of 15 and 64) are now using generative AI tools (Q4 2025: 16.3%) reflecting not only growing adoption, but also more intensive use, particularly in leading markets, such as the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Norway, Ireland and France. These findings are based on the latest AI Diffusion Report published by the Microsoft AI Economy Institute.
Switzerland strengthens its position among leading AI nations
Switzerland remains well above the global average. With an adoption rate of 37.8% (Q4 2025: 34.8%), more than one in three working-age people are now using AI tools. This continued increase shows that AI is moving beyond experimentation and becoming a regular part of how people work, learn, and create.
Marc Holitscher, National Technology Officer at Microsoft Switzerland, said: “Switzerland continues to build on a strong foundation for AI adoption. The next phase will be defined by how effectively organizations translate this momentum into tangible impact at scale. As companies move from experimentation to operational use, a strong focus on responsible AI will be essential, ensuring that innovation is grounded in trust and transparency. By continuing to invest in infrastructure, skills, and a collaborative ecosystem, Switzerland is well positioned to do exactly that.”

Technological advances are shaping the next phase
A key driver of this shift is the rapid evolution of AI capabilities. In particular, advances in AI-powered development tools are enabling ideas to be translated into applications faster than ever before. This is already visible in significantly increased developer activity — a clear signal that AI is not only reaching more users, but also deepening productivity.
At the same time, global dynamics are becoming more differentiated. While Europe, including Switzerland, shows steady progress, a growing share of momentum is emerging from Asia, where improved local language capabilities and high digital engagement are accelerating adoption across both advanced and emerging economies.
One challenge remains: the gap between the Global North and the Global South continues to widen. While AI use is expanding rapidly in advanced economies, many regions still face structural barriers, including access to infrastructure, connectivity, and digital skills.
