The general manager of Apodissi, Margherita Trestini, has called for collaboration between government, industry and academia to drive innovation and the development of Nigeria’s digital future. She made this call during a panel session at the Digital Nigeria International Conference and Exhibition (DNICE 2025) in Abuja.
Trestini highlighted several key challenges and opportunities facing Nigeria in the realm of digital innovation and development.
She revealed that Nigeria is losing highly skilled professionals, including AI developers and data analysts due to a lack of opportunities and reproducibility in their products. There is a global demand for digital skills, including AI and data analysis, which Nigeria can capitalise on.
According to her, Nigeria needs to develop its digital infrastructure and ensure data sovereignty to fully utilise its data resources.
Trestini warned of the risks associated with digital fragmentation and the lack of coordination in the country’s digital development.
She emphasised the necessity for the Nigerian government to invest in digital education and training to cultivate local talent. Additionally, she called for cooperation with universities across Africa and Europe to harness diverse expertise and perspectives.
Trestini encouraged innovators to build upon existing project outputs to foster local innovation, particularly by developing models for underrepresented local languages, recognising that language is context-dependent.
She concluded by stating that showcasing the diversity of Africa’s challenges and opportunities while promoting unity in addressing them is essential for development.
