Airtel Tanzania and VETA have signed a landmark agreement expanding their digital learning partnership, establishing Airtel VSOMO as the country’s official online vocational training platform aimed at boosting digital skills and youth employability nationwide.

Airtel Tanzania and the Vocational Education and Training Authority (VETA) have formalized a significant partnership to expand digital vocational training across Tanzania, marking a major advancement in the country’s digital education landscape.

The agreement designates Airtel VSOMO as VETA’s official national platform for online vocational training, creating new pathways for skills development that could help address youth unemployment and support Tanzania’s growing digital economy.

Charles Kamoto, Managing Director of Airtel Tanzania, emphasized the partnership’s focus on inclusive digital transformation. “Airtel VSOMO enables Tanzanians to gain practical skills anytime and anywhere using their digital devices,” Kamoto stated during the signing ceremony in Dar es Salaam.

The collaboration leverages Airtel Tanzania’s extensive network of 23.7 million subscribers to deliver vocational training to both urban and rural communities. Through the Airtel Africa Foundation, the telecom provider will supply critical connectivity infrastructure while offering zero-rated access to the platform, effectively removing cost barriers that typically limit educational opportunities.

VETA Director General Anthony Kasore welcomed the enhanced partnership, urging for stronger integration of practical training components into the Airtel VSOMO platform. His comments highlighted the need for balancing theoretical knowledge with hands-on skills that can be applied in real-world settings.

The platform’s growth metrics demonstrate significant early adoption. With approximately 59,000 downloads to date—60 percent through zero-rated access—the service has registered over 27,000 users. More than 9,500 learners have enrolled in vocational programs, with nearly 7,000 successfully completing their training.

Airtel’s commitment extends beyond technology provision. The company has reinvested approximately 80.6 million Tanzanian shillings from its share of training fees back into VETA, supporting platform expansion, content development, and system strengthening. This reinvestment model helps ensure sustainability while continuously improving educational offerings.

Beatrice Singano, Airtel Africa Foundation Manager, detailed how the program’s flexible, shorter courses of 2-3 months are specifically designed to accommodate young people’s needs. She also highlighted complementary initiatives such as Fursa Lab, Shule Yetu, and various fellowship programs that further promote innovation and expand educational access.

The economic impact of the platform is already substantial. Airtel VSOMO has generated an estimated 1.2 billion Tanzanian shillings in economic value. Additionally, individual learners have saved an average of 180,000 shillings compared to traditional training pathways, making vocational education significantly more affordable.

Currently offering 13 vocational courses with plans for expansion, the partners aim to enroll 400 new learners monthly. This ambitious target reflects the growing demand for digital skills in Tanzania’s evolving job market and the platform’s potential to bridge educational gaps across the country.

The partnership represents a significant step in Tanzania’s broader digital transformation strategy, potentially serving as a model for public-private collaborations in education throughout East Africa. By combining VETA’s educational expertise with Airtel’s technological infrastructure, the initiative addresses critical barriers to skills development that have historically limited economic opportunities for many Tanzanians.
