Birmingham opens North Star Learning Lab with high-tech tools for residents
The city of Birmingham, in partnership with Apple-backed nonprofit, Ed Farm, opened the federally funded “North Star Learning Lab” Wednesday at the North Birmingham Public Library, with high-tech tools including 3-D modeling, multi-track audio recording, a green screen video backdrop and a four-person podcast studio.
The Ed Farm will oversee programs designed to equip Birmingham residents with in-demand digital skills, workforce training and creative technology.
“This is about much more than technology and skills. It’s about unlocking opportunity for all learners with the drive and potential to thrive in our city’s fast-growing tech economy,” said Waymond Jackson Jr., president of Ed Farm.
“The North Star Learning Lab will serve as a model for the new workforce library of the future and equip community members with the tools, skills, and experiences they need to fill or create the jobs of tomorrow.”
Built with funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, the Technology Suite is a learning laboratory for teaching digital work skills to prepare for high-technology jobs.
“The partnership between Ed Farm and the city of Birmingham is another powerful example of how public and private collaboration can bring innovation and opportunity directly into our communities,” said Mayor Randall Woodfin. “The North Star Learning Lab reflects our commitment to ensuring that North Birmingham residents have access to the tools and technology needed to succeed in a modern economy.”
Besides the city and Ed Farm, education partners including Lawson State Community College, are offering the lab to funnel cutting-edge learning environments and digital workforce development opportunities directly into the city’s neighborhoods.
The new space is expected to serve more than 1,600 learners and community members annually, advancing Birmingham’s commitment to innovation, workforce development and economic growth, city officials said.
