Long Beach residents can learn about AI, digital privacy during community workshops this month – Press Telegram
Long Beach’s Department of Technology and Innovation will host a series of free community workshops throughout October, during which residents can learn more about generative artificial intelligence, digital skills and data privacy.
These workshops are intended to give Long Beach residents the skills and confidence needed to navigate today’s digital world and rapidly evolving landscape of AI, according to a press release.
The series will include presentations, hands-on activities and live demonstrations of common AI tools. Participants will have the opportunity to gain experience using AI tools safely and effectively, while also learning how to implement practical data privacy and cybersecurity tips in their daily lives.
Participants, officials said, will gain a clear understanding of generative AI, as well as how the city is using it.
Here are the workshop series dates and locations:
- From 6 to 7:30 p.m Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Doris Topsy-Elvord Community Center at Houghton Park, 6301 Myrtle Ave.
- From 6 to 7:30 p.m Monday, Oct. 13, at El Dorado Park West Community Center, 2800 N. Studebaker Road.
- From 6 to 7:30 p.m Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Silverado Park Community Center, 1545 W. 31st St.
- From noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, at Long Beach Senior Center, 1150 E. Fourth St.
- From 3 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Billie Jean King Main Library, 200 W. Broadway.
The workshops are free to attend and open to all levels of AI experience. Each workshop will cover the same content, ensuring all participants have consistent access to the information, according to a press release.
Residents are encouraged to register in advance at lbcity.info/aiprivacy.
Interpretation services in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog will be available upon request. To ensure accommodation, people can request in advance when registering for a workshop.
The community workshop series is part of the city’s celebration of Digital Inclusion Week, from Oct. 6 to Oct. 10. The annual nationwide event is dedicated to raising awareness about digital equity and the importance of inclusion in an increasingly digital world. Long Beach’s workshops support the continued efforts to increase digital inclusion, officials said, as well as promote safe and effective use of emerging technologies, and strengthen public understanding of data privacy and AI.
